Measuring the Effectiveness of Your Wiki by Leveraging Analytics

Author: Aseem Parikh

Overview

As the Internet continues to evolve, the role of social media tools in our lives is growing. Many organizations are using social media to better engage and appeal to their users. Whether they use blogs, microblogs, forums, wikis, or social networking sites to cater to the needs of their users, organizations should keep their own objectives in sight.

Since social media tools cover such a wide variety of applications, the scope of this paper is limited to the most notable of the social collaboration tools – the wiki. Wikis are an excellent way to spur innovation, foster communication, and share information among an organization’s user base. A healthy wiki with an active user base can align with an organization’s business goals. By collecting analytics on the wiki, it becomes possible to measure performance towards the organization’s business goals.

Most organizations already collect some sort of analytical information on their sites; however, they may not be collecting or interpreting the data that tells them what they want to know most: “Is my investment paying off?” By incorporating the proper analytics, organizations can gain a better understanding of how users are collaborating, creating and refining content, and sharing knowledge. This white paper aims to help organizations understand the criteria of a healthy wiki, measure the effectiveness of their wikis, and become better equipped to identify problems and measure progress towards performance goals.
