Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies: What You Need to Know about Emerging International Standards for Accessibility

Introduction
The United Nation’s “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” which became a legally enforceable instrument among ratifying nations in May 2008, provides clear principles for creating accessible information and communication technologies (ICTs). The Convention’s guidelines will be used to develop international standards that enable persons with disabilities to effectively use the Internet and other digital technologies. These standards will apply to both public- and private-sector organizations. Although the United States has not officially signed the Convention, the U.S. government is moving along its own path to adopt common accessibility standards through Section 508 regulations, which apply to federal agencies and, in many instances, their contractors.
