Soup to Nuts - Building, Consulting, and Deploying Portals for United Technologies

Hamilton Sunstrand is a subsidiary of United Technologies best known for its aerospace work: it supplies mechanical and electrical systems for commercial, private, and military aircraft around the world, as well as for various space programs. The company employs 15,000 geographically dispersed employees. Communication across complex business units was difficult and information-sharing was complicated by its multitude of legacy systems on different platforms.

The company wanted a centralized experience for its 15,000 employees in Connecticut, Illinois, and Southern California--and wanted it quickly. It hired PPC in late 2000 to develop an enterprise-wide portal, My Hamilton Sunstrand, using Plumtree Corporate Portal 4.0.

As lead, PPC handled every aspect of the project: project planning, requirements analysis, content design, taxonomy development, creation of meta-data standards, installation, configuration, testing, roll out, and training. PPC brought the project in on time, and under budget.

My Hamilton Sunstrand, a customizable personal webpage, brings together "mission-critical" content and applications, including engineering designs, manufacturing specifications, competitive intelligence, and industry news, all now available from a single point of access. Users also have access to a wide assortment of personal business tools and applications, including email inboxes, calendar, personnel directories, weather and travel information, plus UTC's full suite J.D. Edwards enterprise software.

PPC provided training on content management and gadget development to the portal administrators in many different divisions of the company, and training to local IT staff so they could maintain the portal and further extend it to other parts of the company.

As UTC continued to take advantage of portal technology, PPC was there to help with the development of the B2C Portal for key customers such as Boeing and Honeywell, and the B2S Portal for key suppliers. The portal, My Hamilton Sunstrand, has proved so effective that PPC was brought in to provide a broad range of Portal development services to UTC business units Pratt & Whitney USA and Pratt & Whitney Canada.
